Greg Bullock is a Jamaican car enthusiast living in Chicago. He has always loved cars and it shows in his dedication over the years. Greg has been drag racing for 20 years, built 3 race cars, and was one of a handful of mechanics that tuned high compression engines to run turbo boost on pump gas during the nineties. For example, his Mustang engine has a 10.2:1 compression ratio, and runs 14 pounds.
Greg also turbocharged a 86 VW Golf GTI 16v, that he bored to 2.2L and converted the mechanical VW CIS fuel injection to a Volvo EFI system, resulting in 210WHP (wheel horsepower) on a Dynojet dyno. According to the engineers in Sweden whom he consulted, he couldn’t get any more power from his setup because the Volvo MAF sensor was maxed out! Not bad for 15 years ago when Mustangs, Corvettes and Supra’s had 220HP at the flywheel. At one point Greg also owned and boosted a Honda CRX SI which eventually was sold to someone in New York when tuned imports on the east coast took off.
Over the years Greg has taken on several tuning projects. One most noteworthy was a Volvo 760 Turbo which ran 14.2 on the quarter mile. This car wasn’t very popular at all and making that much power from a heavy chassis with a puny 4 cylinder was unheard of at the time.
The Mustang
The original plan for his Mustang was to compete in the NMRA Ford drag racing Real Street (or True Street, they changed the name some time ago) event. This was a 30 mile road course with a Police escort, which ended at the starting line of the drag strip, with no cool down and you had to make 3 back to back runs. There was also no adding of fuel, or tyre changes and if you opened the hood you were disqualified. The Mustang was very competitive in this class, however, no sponsors stepped up with prize money, so only trophies were given out. Therefore, the racers stuck to the popular cash-paying events and the class faded.
He then decided to go with the pros and run the Drag Radial class, where several upgrades are allowed but you have to use drag radial or “street” tyres. But as soon as the turbocharger caught on in the Mustang world, several racers appeared on scene with big 100 millimeter turbos and the 1/4 mile times dropped to 8 seconds. On street tires, not slicks! Perfect example being “Big Daddy Dwayne Gutridge” doing a wheel stand on his launch, on his way to a 160 MPH pass on drag radials. For now, the Mustang is just a weekend warrior that draws a huge crowd everywhere it goes.
Loaded dyno power = 485 RWHP (Mustang Dyno with eddy currents load on)
Loaded dyno torque = 690 Ft Pounds
Boost level = 12 pounds
Electromotive TEC 2 Stand alone, programmed by owner
5.7 liter Ford block with Edlebrock aluminium heads & intake
Future plans
A cruise of the entire Route 66 that goes from Chicago to California, drag at the Ponoma raceway there, then drive back. After that, his twin daughters will use it to drag at the local strip. (If they are strong enough to sink the clutch pedal.) Or he might buy a Factory Five body kit, and swap the running gear. Imagine 485 WHP in a 1800 pound car??!!
